WINNING STREAKS

By: Steve Higginbotham

The other night I watched as the women’s number one basketball team in the nation, UConn, was upset by Villanova for the Big East Conference Championship. What made this game even more interesting was the fact that this was UConn’s first loss in 70 consecutive games! That winning streak is only surpassed by the UCLA Men’s Basketball program which won 88 straight games from (1971- 1974).

But here’s my point. No matter who you are; No matter what your reputation may be; No matter how good you are; No matter how well you’ve played in the past; and no matter how well you play in the future; it’s just a matter of time until the streak ends. Eventually, you’re going to stumble and lose a game.

Isn’t it that way in our walk with God? We try our best to serve Him faithfully, and we have many successes to our record for which to be thankful. But sooner or later, we’ll succumb to temptation, and because of weakness, we’ll sin.

The good news is that unlike the NCAA tournament, (i.e. one loss and you’re out), God has, in the person of Jesus, made provision for our shortcomings, and after we suffer a loss, He gives us the opportunity to start all over again. In the “game of life,” it’s not the one with the best record who wins the victory, but the one who, regardless of how many losses he has suffered in the past, refuses to quit playing.
