THE DANGER OF “SMALL THINGS”

By: Neil W. Anderson, Editor of Gospel Advocate

With increasing frequency I hear of congregations of the church of Christ choosing to include musical instruments in the activities of the church. As I read of their decisions, none present a biblical reason for their decision to add musical instruments in worship.

Neither do they question the use of a cappella singing. Some of these congregations hold to a cappella singing because they consider it a part of their tradition. But most are simply rationalizing the use of an instrument by saying, 1) God does not forbid its use, and 2) they like it.

A recent letter from a friend said: “We are part of a church of Christ that is past many of the issues plaguing many churches today. I am on my first praise team and loving it.” His sentiments are in line with a new idea beginning to circulate that singing is not worship to God but is for our own benefit.

It is appalling that in many instances members are saying their elders have approved use of instrumental music, thus giving them the assurance that their actions are acceptable. When were elders authorized to alter or compromise God’s will?

David Lipscomb said, “The organ is a small thing, but it tests our willingness or unwillingness to abide in the appointments of the Lord….The door that admits it will admit a thousand other innovations.”
